Singing Our Own Song

Song 1
Song 2

As I was conversing with the doves this morning, I noticed how beautifully diverse each dove’s song is. Though they all carry the same general pattern (oouu – ou-ou), each dove sings a slightly different version of this song. And this wonderful variation adds interesting layers to the urban soundscape.

In a similar way, each of our quirks and differences makes the Lifescape (the “landscape” of life) so much richer and colorful. And the way we each express our unique Being – the song that we sing – becomes part of this collective experience we call Life. But how dull would Life be if everyone was singing the same song? If you ask me, Life is so much more exciting and fulfilling because of all the wonderful diversity around and in us.

Of course, there may be times when being too different can affect the fitness, or reproductive success, of an individual. If a bird’s song varies too much from the original pattern, then others may fail to even recognize this divergent individual as a potential/suitable mate. Yet, there are other times when one individual’s off-beat song becomes the catalyst for the emergence of a whole new species (speciation by behavioral isolation).

So yes, maybe some people aren’t going to be a fan of your song, pero para el gusto se hicieron los colores (a saying that means that variety exists to satisfy diverse tastes). There is no need to try so hard to fit into a mold that feels unnatural to us. All that we need do is sing the song that’s in each of our Souls – to show up in the world the way that feels most natural to each of us.
