Familial Tensions May Be High

This holiday season, familial tensions may be high. Things hidden or kept in the dark may be coming to light. *ESCANDALO*

Severity Level: Volcanic eruption

Recommendations:

  1. Be aware of others and be mindful of the sources of tension within a group.
  2. When you are able, try to alleviate tensions by:
    • Encouraging honest and open communications between individuals.
    • Correcting any misinformation, miscommunications, or misunderstandings as they come up.
    • Listening patiently and without judgement when others are speaking.
    • Initiating group bonding/strengthening activities such as:
      • playing games together [1] (e.g. dominos, boardgames, cards, video games, tag, man-hunt, etc.)
      • social dancing
      • talking/sharing circle [2]
    • Lending a helping hand when you see a need and opportunity for it. [3]
  3. Go for a soothing walk outside or try to find a quiet place to sit and be Still (i.e. meditate) if you feel yourself getting overwhelmed. Gently make this suggestion at anytime you feel that someone in the group may benefit from doing this. [4]

[1] It is important that these games remain light and fun, as over-competitiveness in groups with high tension may strain situations further. It’s also important to be as inclusive as possible so that everyone who wants to play has the chance to.

[2] It is important that this is based in honest and meaningful communication and not just trivial gossip.

[3] This can help foster harmony within the group as you reduce the load (and tension) others may be carrying. For instance, party hosts are usually busy running around getting things in order. See in what ways you can help them so that they may be able to enjoy the festivities as well.

[4] There’s no shame in needing and taking a little alone time during a family gathering.
