Detachment

Detachment is the art of releasing worldly expectations of outcomes, people, or objects. Detachment allows us to more easily let go of situations, people, or things that are no longer in alignment with our current spiritual attainment and path. It is about surrendering what we think should be and accepting what is. This is not to say that we should be complacent in unpleasant or undesired situations โ€“ but to accept the Divine lesson in situations that we have no control over.

When we detach from an outcome, we can maintain hope and faith that a situation will work out in our favor without any expectations for how exactly that will come to pass. When we detach from a person, we are letting go of any expectations we may impose upon them. In doing this, unconditional love can take root in the place of conditional love. Detaching from a person stems from the belief that everyone is on their own spiritual journey and that people will come and go in our life in due course. Detaching from objects or worldly possessions makes the loss or theft of things a lot easier to get over. It stems from the belief that we have everything we need in any given moment. Remember that whatever (or whoever) is meant for you will always find its way back to you in one form or another.

A helpful affirmation to aid in detachment is โ€˜I know that everything happens for my Highest goodโ€™ (even when it doesnโ€™t feel like it). So let us wield the sword of detachment to unbind ourselves from the disillusionments of the world. And let us step closer into embodying our Higher Selves by relinquishing expectations over to the Divine.
